Generally, tanning salons have various types of tanning equipment. Tanning equipment generally includes tanning beds and stand-up tanning booths, which allow customers to tan while they stand up. Tanning bulbs are placed behind Plexiglas, which surrounds their body.

A tanning bed is often made of steel and contains 24-46 bulbs that are 100-160 watts. Customers can lay down on Plexiglas while a cover of Plexiglas comes down. How long you stay in the tanning bed is determined by how many bulbs are in the bed, as well at the customer’s skin type.

Tanning beds operate on a timer. The timer is set for a predetermined time and then shutx off automatically. Safety mechanisms are installed that allow the customer to quickly shut the tanning bed off if a emergency arises.

New salon owners often prefer to buy used equipment for tanning salons. When owners choose to upgrade their equipment, they will sell off their old equipment at a great discount. Since the bulbs can be easily replaced, used equipment is a great way to go for those venturing into the salon business. Tanning beds and booths that have electrical systems that are properly functioning, as well as sturdy frames, are a great alternative for those looking to buy a tanning bed.

Tanning salon owners are also using sunless tanners. Spas and high end tanning salons are starting to supplement more traditional tanning with sunless tanners. Depending on the type of session, it can range from $25 to $100 for an hour. Customers, who choose sunless tanners, can either use a spray booth or an airbrush system.
