A Guide to Tanning Products
Many people love the way they look with a bit of sun-kissed color. Years ago, people didn't know the dangers of sunbathing and would spend entire days on lounge chairs, slathered with oil. The darker the tan, the better. But then, the world found out that the ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun can cause problems like premature aging and even malignant skin cancer. The world of tanning changed, to incorporate other ways of bronzing the body.
Some people feel that tanning indoors using a tanning bed or sun lamp is an effective way to get a summer glow. While it certainly can be effective, the FDA and CDC recommends consumers exercise great caution before using these methods. Tanning this way still exposes the skin to cancer causing ultraviolet rays. Regardless of these risks, many people choose to tan this way. If you're one of them, you'll need a good indoor tanning product. At salons everywhere, you'll find a staggering variety of creatively marketed and packaged lotions, gels, mousses and sprays designed to work with indoor tanning equipment.
If you're going to be outdoors, you'll want to select a sunscreen with SPF. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the higher the number, the more protection the product offers. If you've got fair skin that burns easily, go for the highest level of protection you can find. You'll still get sun, but without the risk of sunburn. If your skin tans easily and rarely burns, you may be able to use a lotion or oil with a lower SPF, like 15. Children should always use a sunscreen with the highest SPF available.
For the very safest tan, go for sunless tanning products. There are many different types out there, from drugstore brands to high end department store choices. You can find lotions, gels, mousses, and sprays. Airbrushing is the latest innovation in sunless tanning, and offers an even, natural looking tan quickly and easily. Unless you're using a home airbrush tan machine, you'll need to head to a salon to get an airbrushed tan. The closest thing in most drugstores are the new spray products that release a micro-fine mist at any angle. The best thing about a sunless tan is how safe it is. Today's sunless products nourish the skin, give you a tan, and do it without any damage!
