How to Use Sunless Tanning Products

The dangers of sun damage caused by UVA and UVB rays has been widely touted in the media. Even the FDA and CDC have issued fact sheets and warnings about the hazards of exposure to UV rays through the sun, tanning beds, or sun lamps. The fair-skinned are at the highest risk when it comes to sun damage. However, they are also the people who often want to get a tan because they like the way their skin looks a bit darker. Let's face it -- a good tan can impart a youthful, attractive look. But, attractiveness isn't worth your health. This is where sunless tanning products come in handy.

Sunless tanners work with your individual skin tone to give you a healthy, bronzed glow. Some people associate these products with orange-toned streaks. However, by choosing the right product for your skin tone and applying it correctly, you can get a gorgeous tan without any discoloration or streaking. When shopping for sunless tanner, always choose a product made for your natural skin tone. If you're very fair, you don't want to choose anything that says something like 'dark' or 'deep dark.' Always look for something that states it is made for the type of skin tone you have. This will ensure you get natural looking color. There are sunless tanners available in lots of different forms. You can find lotions, gels, mousses, sprays and even towlettes. The type you choose is up to you, although many people find that the new fine-mist spray products are easy to use.

An even application is a must for a natural look. The first thing you'll want to do before applying the product is exfoliate your entire body in the shower. This can be achieved with a grainy body scrub or rough loofah sponge. Exfoliation works to remove dead skin cells and allows the color to develop evenly. After exfoliation, apply the sunless tanner to your skin using brisk circular motions. Rub thoroughly to avoid streaking, or try one of the products with streakguard color to ensure perfect application. Apply the product sparingly to elbows and knees. Once you're done with the application process, wash hands thoroughly to avoid discolored palms.

Most sunless tanning products require you to wait at least five or ten minutes before getting dressed to avoid staining clothes or removing product from the skin. Some dry more quickly than others, so be sure to check the package instructions. Depending on the product you use, you can expect to start seeing results within one to three hours or so. If you desire a deeper color, simply apply a second coat of the product. It's that simple to get a safe, beautiful tan!
