Is Tanning Safe?

For ages, people have indulged in the pursuit of tanning. Before the dangers of sun damage were known, individuals commonly sunbathed for hours on end with no skin protection. Many even slathered on oils designed to amplify the effects of the sun's rays. Today, sunbathing without protection is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Many people do still like to lay out in the sun, but they are taking precautions like applying sunscreen before doing so. It is possible to enjoy the sun safely, if you use the right products.

You will want to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. The higher the SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, the higher the level of protection. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will provide moderate protection from the sun's harmful UV rays. If you want maximum protection, go for a higher SPF. There are sunscreens on the market today that have an SPF of 50 or even higher. You can find all kinds of sunscreens. There are ones in lotion form, oil form, spray form, and even mousse form. Some even have a disappearing color guide that allows you to see if you've missed any spots after applying.

Maybe you want a golden glow without sun exposure. For this, many people turn to sun lamps or beds. But are they really a safe way to get a tan? The FDA doesn't think so, and even offers a fact sheet for consumers on this subject. An alternative to beds and lamps for people seeking a tan is to use a sunless product. These products come in the same forms as sunscreens, from lotion to spray and everything in between. Once upon a time, sunless tans were often streaky and orange. But no more! Today's product choices are designed to impart a natural looking tan when used correctly.

One of the newest innovations in sunless tanning is the spray tanning booth. Mystic Tan is a widely popular type of spray tan booth that basically airbrushes the sunless tan solution all over the body. It takes very little time, develops shortly after application, and gives gorgeous color that lasts for around a week or sometimes more. It costs around $25 or so to get one of these spray tans, but is definitely worth it for anyone who wants a flawless glow without any risk.
